Tennis Channel teams with Lingopal.ai for first live coverage match commentary translation

During the Guadalajara Open Akron WTA 500 tournament this week, match commentary will be translated from English to Spanish in real-time by AI.

Tennis Channel viewers in Spain that tune into the Guadalajara Open Akron WTA 500 tournament this week will experience match commentary translated from English to Spanish in real-time by artificial intelligence, thanks to a collaboration between the network and Lingopal.ai.
The deployment is considered a beta test, with the first match of each day of competition automatically translated by Lingopal.ai’s platform and distributed to viewers of Tennis Channel’s Spain channel.

Eventually, SVP/Tennis Channel International Andy Reif told SBJ, Tennis Channel’s vision is to use this type of technology to scale and localize match coverage across its international channels. As of now those include channels in Germany, Greece, India, Netherlands, Switzerland and the United Kingdom in addition to Spain, with more set to launch next year.

“It opens up so many ways to cost-effectively take the sport of tennis – which is such a global sport compared to any other sport, other than maybe soccer – and to be able to produce content and send it around the world and localize that instantaneously in multiple languages,” Reif said. “That’s the future we’re going to have.”
